One of the lesser-known mainline games, Sonic the Hedgehog CD released for the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis. The story sees Sonic trying to stop Dr. Robotnik from powering up the Death Egg space station by collecting rings, defeating enemies, and clearing levels. The number of stages was expanded to 10 and a second playable character, Sonic’s best friend Tails, became available by plugging in a second controller. If you enjoy dark and alternative stories, this is the story for you. Sonic Mania would’ve been great even if it just stuck to the remastered and new versions of previous Sonic zones, but what truly makes it sing are the entirely original stages. Levels like Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon Zone offered the perfect counterpart to the comforting familiarity of the remastered stages. Replayability is also among the highest compared to other 2D Sonic games, thanks to the multitude of collectibles and rewards found off the beaten paths. As good as we just said Sonic 2 was, Sonic CD feels like a more polished and confident version of that. It introduced us to Amy Rose and the version of Metal Sonic that we all know and loathe today.

Green Hill 1’s demo is broken because, oddly enough, it’s assigned to the wrong level, and actually belongs to this same early level layout for Marble 1. Similarly, Star Light 1’s inputs are meant for an earlier Green Hill 1. Why these demos are assigned to the wrong level is anyone’s guess.
