It’s been a while since a good version of Tetris has graced a Nintendo platform. Tetris 99 comes with a slightly simpler presentation, but by utilizing battle royale principles, it freshens the game up in a way that nobody could have ever expected. Just 24 hours ago, somebody could have said “Tetris Battle Royale” and had a good laugh. But this game appears to be no joke and it appears to be excellent in its execution.

There are oodles of options, too, so you can customize everything from the garbage rate to the required amount of matching Puyos to make them pop. While online, you can enjoy Free Play matches or try and increase your rank via Puzzle League.

All your favorite characters from the first game are back, doing something across different worlds and space and junk. I’m just thrilled the weirdo robot named Zed is back with his wonderful loud robot voice. The Adventure mode contains a lot of story as well as a lot of challenging puzzle scenarios of varying modes. It’s such a great way to romp through all the different styles this game has, going from straight Versus matches to some of the wackier stuff like Skill Battles and returning modes such as Big Bang and Swap.

This is a solid read that lucidly breaks down into layers the marvel that is a computer. I felt like a total bad-ass after every completed exercise, and learned a lot about how computers work in the process.
